NZ 1915 ½d Auckland Island General Grant Exp Rare Block of 12 M Cinderella local

½d NZ New Zealand local stamp issued for use by the Auckland Island General Grant Expedition Mint. This block of 12 is the largest multiple seen by us. This expedition to the sub-antarctic Auckland Islands was organised by treasure hunters who were looking for the shipwreck of the USS General Grant which sank during the American Civil War carrying a cargo of gold bullion. The stamps were issued to publicise the event and raise funds for it. The Auckland Islands are a world heritage area and I have visited them twice.
